SAB STARTS NEW ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

At our Summer Retreat in August, Staff Advisory Board members indicated that Advocacy should be a priority for Staff this year. UC's budget woes are a direct result of the State of California chopping millions of dollars of support. This has been a downward trend for almost 20 years now, and we feel that the State needs to know what they are doing to higher education and how we feel about it. As UCSC Staff members and California Taxpayers, we have the power to make our voices heard.

The SAB has started a new Advocacy Committee and meetings will begin soon. If you are interested in participating in this endeavor, please send email to staffadv@ucsc.edu and we will let you know the meeting schedule and the topics we will be addressing.

Second Harvest Food Drive

The Second Harvest Holiday Food Drive is underway. Last year UCSC brought in over 63,000 lbs. of food and cash equivalent which provided over 105,000 meals to local people in need. Go to: http://www.thefoodbank.org to learn more about 2^nd Harvest.

SAB Sponsored Blood Drive

The Staff Advisory Board is working with the Red Cross to sponsor a Blood Drive for Staff and Faculty. The drive will take place Tuesday, January 19, 2010, from 10am - 3pm at the Stevenson Event Center. You will be able to sign up in person at the Chancellor's Holiday Gathering on 12/16/09 or you can go online at http://www.helpsavealife.org/NC/ and type in your zip code, or use the UCSC Sponsor Code ucscsab.

CUCSA - Council of University of California Staff Assemblies

An Important Staff Resource

CUCSA is comprised of an executive board and 2 delegates from each UC Campus, OP and the LNBL. Each year we send two staff members from the SAB as the Junior and Senior Delegate to represent the Santa Cruz Campus. I had the opportunity to participate in this group for the last two years, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a UCSC employee.

CUCSA's mission is to maintain and enhance communication with the University Community on matters of interest to staff employees in accordance with California laws and Regent policy. The Council is involved in issues and concerns of those who are not exclusively represented but may address matters not within the scope of representation for those who are exclusively represented.

Each year, CUCSA members work with UCOP and Administration to find solutions to problems and create an environment where the staff voice is heard at the Regental level. They work directly with the Staff Advisor's to the Regents. They create reports that are presented to the Board of Regents.

If you have issues that you would like to address at the systemwide level, contact our delegates for the 09/10 period.
